Miss Sandugo thru the years

We miss the Sandugo season. Bohol Sandugo was first conceived during the time of then the late Governor Constancio Torralba. That was the euphoria of Edsa. President Corazon Aquino who ascended as the president of the Republic of the Philippines. She also ended the authoritarian regime of President Ferdinand Marcos.

In this time of the pandemic, we just reminisce those days of July when we danced to the rhythm of Sandugo, on the streets and in the towns sending, out the beauties to vie for Miss Sandugo.

Carmen Gatal

I have to thank Ms. Carmen Gatal for supplying me souvenirs of the Sandugo celebration. She is one lady I admire. She is one of those spearheading the Sandugo celebration from the time of its inception up to the present.

Ardy Ines Araneta-Batoy

My editor Ms. Ardy Ines Araneta-Batoy is a name to be carved in the Sandugo catalog. She had been a gracious host to the many Sandugo celebrations, and she did it with gusto.

I’m just thinking of the Sandugo queens. Where are they now? In every grand celebration, there is always a queen, to reign over the celebration

I remember the song when we were little girls:
When I grow to be a lady,
I’ll be queen, a lovely queen.

    Walking in a garden shady,

In gowns of green, with silver trim.

Maids in gold and white shall follow me,

And suitors of a high degree.

Before Sandugo, there was the queen for Bohol Agri-fair and she was Miss Olivia Solis of Calape. I also remember another queen in the person of Miss Delia Canda who got married to Atty. De la Serna. Delia is still a beauty in her old age now. I have not seen Olivia since then.
