KAHULOGAN SA EBANGHELYO (Mt16:21-27)
EBANGHELYO (Mateo 16:21-17)
21Sukad niadtong higayona, giingnan ni Jesus ang iyang mga tinun-an sa tin-aw na gayod nga pagkasulti, “Kinahanglan nga moadto ako sa Jerusalem ug paantoson ako pag-ayo sa mga punoan sa mga Judio ug sa mga pangulong pari, ingon man sa mga magtutudlo sa Balaod. Patyon ako nila, apan sa ikatulo ka adlaw mabanhaw ako.” 22Tungod niini gidala siya ni Pedro pahilayo sa uban ug giingnan, “Dili unta kana mahitabo kanimo, Ginoo!” 23Miliso si Jesus ug miingon kang Pedro, “Pahawa, Satanas! Nagbabag ka kanako, kay ang imong hunahuna, hunahuna sa tawo ug dili sa Dios!” 24Unya miingon si Jesus sa iyang mga tinun-an, “Ang buot mahimong akong tinun-an kinahanglan nga hikalimtan niya ang iyang kaugalingon, pas-anon niya ang iyang krus, ug mosunod siya kanako. 25“Kay ang buot magluwas sa iyang kaugalingong kinabuhi mawad-an hinuon niini; apan ang mawad-an sa iyang kinabuhi tungod kanako makabaton niini. 26May makuha ba ang tawo kon maangkon niya ang tibuok kalibotan apan kawad-an siya sa iyang kinabuhi? Wala gayod! Ang tawo walay bisan unsa nga ikahatag aron mabawi niya ang iyang kinabuhi. 27Kay ang Anak sa Tawo hapit na moabot uban sa himaya sa iyang Amahan, kinuyogan sa iyang mga anghel, ug unya balosan niya ang tagsatagsa sumala sa iyang nabuhat. Ang Ebanghelyo sa Ginoo.

KAHULOGAN SA EBANGHELYO (Mateo 16:21-17)
21aSukad niadtong higayona, giingnan ni Jesus ang iyang mga tinun-an sa tin-aw na gayod nga pagkasulti, “Kinahanglan nga moadto ako sa Jerusalem…
Human si Jesus mipalayo sa Jerusalem, karon nausab ang iyang oriyentasyon sa iyang kinabuhi—mopadulong na siya sa Jerusalem. “Kinahanglan…” pulong nga nagtug-an kanato sa pagkamahinungdanon niini. Ang maong desisyon wala maggagikan sa kinaugalingon pagbati ni Jesus, kondili nagagikan sa unsay iyang natugkad nga balaang kabubut-on sa iyang Amahan.
Mao usab kini sa atong kinabuhi adunay mga higayon nga kita gitawag sa pag-usab sa atong mga desisyon. Kinahanglan nga kon unsay mga kausaban niini ato gayod nga paningkamutan nga kini bunga sa atong pagtugkad sa kabubut-on sa Dios pinaagi sa mga pag-ampo ug mga pagpamalandong.
Ang Ginoo mao bay atong gitugyanan sa katapusang paghukom sa atong mga panggibuhaton?
21b … ug paantoson ako pag-ayo sa mga punoan sa mga Judio ug sa mga pangulong pari, ingon man sa mga magtutudlo sa Balaod. Patyon ako nila, apan sa ikatulo ka adlaw mabanhaw ako.”
Sugod niining panahona si Jesus mopasidaan mahitungod sa iyang kamatayon sulod sa tulo ka mga higayon (Mt 16:21, 17:22-23, 30:18-19). Makita na nato kon unsa kalawom ang pamalandong ni Jesus kabahin sa iyang umaabot nga kamatayon.
Ginoo, tagai kami og igong kusog sa pag-atubang sa bisan unsang lisod ug mapait nga panghitabo sa kinabuhi!
22aTungod niini gidala siya ni Pedro pahilayo sa uban ug giingnan, “Dili unta kana mahitabo kanimo, Ginoo!” 23Miliso si Jesus ug miingon kang Pedro, “Pahawa, Satanas!
Giisip ni Jesus si Pedro nga Satanas tungod kay misulay man kini siya sa pagpalikay kaniya gikan sa kapaitan sa Krus. Mao usab tingali kini ang bation sa Dios sa matag higayon nga magdumili kita sa pagpas-an sa atong mga krus sa panahon nga kini atong ikahinagbo sa atong panaw sa kinabuhi.
22b … Nagbabag ka kanako, kay ang imong hunahuna, hunahuna sa tawo ug dili sa Dios!”
Makaplagan nato kon unsa ang tinubdan sa kusog nga anaa kang Jesus diha sa iyang pagpakibisog sa mga pagsulay: ang iyang kasingkasing sa walay hunong anaa nag-atubang sa iyang langitnong Amahan. Maoy hinungdan nga iyang gisud-ong ang tanan nga nahitabo sa iyang kinabuhi uban sa mata sa iyang Amahan.
Sa atong panahon adunay tentasyon nga motan-aw kita sa mga panghitabo sumala lamang sa atong tawhanong tinan-awan. Usahay gani atong ipahawom ang atong larawan sa Dios sumala sa atong gusto nga ilarawan kaniya. Ang Ginoo maoy atong buot ipasibo sa atong tawhanong panghunahuna. Dili kini mao!
24Unya miingon si Jesus sa iyang mga tinun-an, “Ang buot mahimong akong tinun-an kinahanglan nga hikalimtan niya ang iyang kaugalingon, pas-anon niya ang iyang krus, ug mosunod siya kanako.
Dili unta kita makugang niining maong pamahayag ni Jesus. Kay sa atong kunuhay modernong panghunahuna ang labing mahinungdanon mao ang kaugalingong katagbawan, kahilayan, kagawasan. Tan-awa ang modernong panultihon “Ako magbuot sa akong kaugalingong kinabuhi!”
Apan si Jesus mitanyag og laing paagi sa pagpakabuhi: kini pinaagi sa Krus!
Aduna ba kitay mga kasinatian diin atong gipas-an ang krus tungod kay mibarog kita pabor kang Cristo sa mga isyu nga managlahi ang gibarogan sa daghang mga katawhan; sa pakig-uban sa mga tawo nga lisod sabton; tungod kay ikaw gibutangbutangan; tungod kay ikaw wala na tuhoi o saligi?
25“Kay ang buot magluwas sa iyang kaugalingong kinabuhi mawad-an hinuon niini; apan ang mawad-an sa iyang kinabuhi tungod kanako makabaton niini. 26May makuha ba ang tawo kon maangkon niya ang tibuok kalibotan apan kawad-an siya sa iyang kinabuhi? Wala gayod! Ang tawo walay bisan unsa nga ikahatag aron mabawi niya ang iyang kinabuhi.
Pagkalahi sa sukdanan ni Jesus. Kinahanglan nga kita kawad-an aron kita makabaton. Daw binuang nga baroganan hangtod nga mapadayag diha kanato ang kamatuoran mahitungod sa pagkabanhaw ni Cristo nga nahitabo human lamang sa kamatayon.
27Kay ang Anak sa Tawo hapit na moabot uban sa himaya sa iyang Amahan, kinuyogan sa iyang mga anghel, ug unya balosan niya ang tagsatagsa sumala sa iyang nabuhat.
Himaya! Moabot lamang sa paagi nga anaa ang kalisod. Ang kadaugan moabot lamang tapos sa paningkamot!

LOVING VIA THE CROSS
Word :Today’s gospel continues the narrative begun on last Sunday.
Peter, in the name of the small group of the Twelve Apostles, recognized in Jesus the Christ or the Messiah. Simon Peter heard Jesus when he proclaimed him “happy’ or “blessed” to have received this revelation from God. Then Jesus gave Simon Peter the mission: to be the Rock on which Jesus was about to build!
Concluding this solemn promise, Jesus “strictly ordered his disciples to tell no one that he was the Messiah (Mt 16:20). Why impose this secret? The second part of the narrative—the gospel today—shows how Peter and his friends had a false idea of the Messiah.
Today’s gospel begins with “From that time on…” (Mt 16:21). In these words, Matthew underlines the fact that the profession of faith at Caesarian Philippi is a decisive turning-point in the itinerary of Jesus. Just as in our lives too there are certain events which mark a breaking-point of a “call” to something else, Jesus makes it clear to his disciples the orientation of his life.
Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised (Mt 16:21). From that day on, Jesus would announce three times his suffering and death (Mt 16:21, 17:22-23, 30:18-19). Thus, we see that Jesus lived for many weeks with this thought of his death.
He was about thirty years old. His ministry was to come to an imminent and brutal end. Humanly speaking this was a total failure.
There is no need to be a star-gazer to foresee the coming unavoidable occurrences. Jesus noticed the growing hatred of the leaders for him. He also recognized the indifference of the crowds. The opposition was increasing and catching hold of the entire Jerusalem. Yet, Jesus went there willfully. Definitely, Jesus gives us an example of courage to face our difficult situations.
Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do” (Mt 16:22-23).
What an accusation. Peter is accused to be a “tempter” for Jesus. This rebuke of Jesus is a sign for us that he must have felt, in his own flesh, the same awful repulsion we feel before whatever is contrary to our own sensibility. There is always in us the tendency to avoid the cross.
God’s outlook is very different from ours. More than any other, in our modern age, there is so strong a temptation to reduce the problems of faith to mere human lines of thought. There are those who hardly accepts what is beyond human reason. There are even those who would go to the extent of forbidding God to be God. Many people of our time are shouting loud; “Let God be like us!” In other word, we wish God to adapt himself to our ways of thinking.
But, in such a case, we would have only a God of our measure and our image—a God that is invented by us!

Order: Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, * take up his cross, and follow me” (Mt 16:22-23). We should not go over these surprising words too quickly. The entire modern mentality which surrounds us and penetrates our own orientations, upholds self-fulfillment, pleasure, unrestricted freedom, uncensored creativity, and self-enjoyment. The battle cry seems to be: “I want to live my own life!”
But Jesus proposes to us a totally different way of life—to love via the way of the cross. He upholds the opposite of what the world offers us. For Jesus, there is no real love without this self-renunciation.
To realize how costly love is, we have only to evoke certain painful situations in which love is at stake: to forgive an enemy; to have the courage to take sides for Jesus in an unbelieving or sarcastic world; to love one’s spouse faithfully, etc…

Realities: During the American Civil War, President Lincoln had a strapping athletic young man as his secretary.
In those days before office machinery, such a man would literally be pushing a pen or pencil.
This particular one was not happy about it. He wanted to get out where the action was on the battlefield. He wanted to go and do great things for his country. He was quite willing to die, if necessary.
So he kept complaining to Lincoln about the women’s work he was doing, when he could be in uniform confronting the enemy. After hearing this usual complaint one day, Lincoln stared at him, rubbed his hands in his beard and said in his philosophical way, “Young man, as I see it, you are quite willing to die for your country, but you are not willing to live for it.” .. .
Martyrs (just a Greek word for witnesses) give their lives by dying or by living. (WITNESSING BY LIVING, Quote)

Obtain for us the grace of a living faith, a sincere loyalty to the Church, acceptance of all her teachings, and obedience to all her precepts.
