Points for Reflection: I am sharing to my dear readers a story which has been a part of my collections to help you reflect as the Universal Church celebrates the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Times – A.

Seven hundred years before the birth of Jesus, there lived in Greece a popular teacher named Aesop.

One reason he was so popular was that he used a lot of stories to teach. He would tell a story and then draw an important truth from it.

For example, one of his stories concerns a dispute between a lion and a man

about whether humans are stronger than lions. The man insists that humans are stronger.

To illustrate his point, he takes the lion to a park and points out a statue of a man

ripping apart the jaws of a lion with his bare hands.

The lion looks at the statue and says, “That’s nothing! It was made by a man.”

Aesop’s point is this: We humans tend to represent things not as they are but as we would like them to be. In other words, we often twist the truth so that it says what we want it to say, rather than what it should say.

High up in the crotch of a tree a mother bird sat on the eggs in her nest. Then she suddenly noticed a python slowly silently slithering towards her. The poor bird, what could she do to protect her eggs from the menacing snake?

A monkey came by, saw the situation and told the mother bird, “Don’t be afraid. I’ll get rid of that phython; I’ll throw stones at him.” “But then you’ll break my eggs,” the mother bird said.

Along rumbled a big elephant. He, too, saw the dangerous situation and assured the mother bird, “Relax and stop crying. I’ll get rid of that python; I’ll pull that tree right out of the ground.”

“Wait a minute”, said the mother bird. “Then you’ll break all my eggs.”

With that the mother bird came to the conclusion that the giants of the forest were not able to drive away the python without breaking her eggs. Suddenly, she hit upon an idea, just as she was ready to abandon the eggs. She would ask the ants to help her.

Suddenly thousands of them came running right up the tree trunk, covered the python completely from nose to tail tip, and left nothing of him except his skin and skeleton.

There was an old shoemaker who once wished to become a minister but for whom the way never opened up. He was the friend of a young divinity student, and when the lad one day was called to his first charge, the old man asked him for a favor. He asked to be allowed always to make his shoes, so that he might feel the preacher was wearing his shoes in that pulpit into which he could never go himself. The parents of St, Therese … both wanted to become religious and didn’t make it. Then raised a family of four nuns … one a saint. (Barclay, BACKGROUND PEOPLE)

The story is told of a man who set out with a pilgrim’s staff to find a certain saintly hermit to ask of him a question. When he found the hermit, he said, “If you had just one day to live, how would you spend that day?”

The old hermit stroked his long white beard and answered, “Well, first I would say my morning prayer. . . Afterward, I might fix a bit of tea and go out and weed the garden. Then I might go down the road to visit my neighbor John … Then I might take a nap.”

“Wait,” the pilgrim interrupted, “that’s the way you spend every day.” “Of course,” replied the hermit. “Why should the last day be any different from the. rest?” (Paul Wharton, LIVING EACH DAY)

Coming to a small Oklahoma town to be pastor of his first church, an enthusiastic minister was met with the flat statement that he was wasting his time, that the church was dead.

Finally in desperation he placed a notice in the local newspaper stating that, since the church was dead, the funeral would be held the next Sunday afternoon.

The church was crowded by the curious who were rewarded by the sight of a huge coffin covered with flowers. After reading the obituary, the young pastor invited the people up to pay their last respects. As the long queue passed by, each looked into the coffin, then glanced guiltily away. At the bottom of the coffin lay a mirror solemnly reflecting the last remains of the church in the startled faces of the congregation. (DEAD PARISH, Ann Cooper (Readers’ Digest)

A Catholic priest, a Jewish rabbi, and a Protestant minister happened to die at the same time. All three appeared at the pearly gates, but had to wait in a long line. Suddenly a taxi driver joined them. But St. Peter beckoned him to come to the head of the line.

The three clergymen could not understand.

Finally the priest went up to St. Peter and asked, “How come that taxi driver gets to go in ahead of us? You know taxi drivers …

And you also know we three men of the cloth have been preaching all our lives, trying to keep people out of hell.”

St. Peter smiled, “1 know. I know. But … this taxi driver has scared hell out of more people in one week than you three have in your entire lives.” (FEAR OF HELL, Msgr. Arthur Tonne)

You cannot count to one million in ten days and ten nights. Proof: while 1,2,3, etc. can be counted faster than one per second, higher figures like 654,974 etc. take more than a second to say.

Consequently, even if you could say them at the rate of one per second, and even if you would not miss a single second or make a single mistake, you would reach only 864,000 in ten days and ten nights (10 days and nights = 864,000 seconds.) In an ancient civilization a caveman discovered fire. He invented a simple instrument for making fire and learned cooking and melting and other uses for it. As he began to share this new discovery with other cavemen the priests got to hear about it. Being afraid that with this new power they would lose some of their hold over the people, they had the fire-inventing caveman murdered. But then they were afraid that the people might rise up against them so they had a big picture of the inventor painted and a big shrine made. Through this cult they killed fire and it took several thousand years before it was discovered again. (Gerry Pierce, C.Ss.R.)

EBANGHELYO (Mateo 21:33-43)

³³Si Jesus miingon, “Pamati kamo ug laing sambingay. May usa ka tawo nga yutaan nga nagtanom ug mga paras. Gikoral niya kini ug gikalotag lungag nga kasudlan sa giniok nga ubas, ug nagtukod siyag bantayan. Unya gipasaopan niya ang iyang parasan ug milangyaw siya. ³⁴ Sa tingpamupo na sa ubas, gipadala niya ang iyang mga ulipon ngadto sa mga saop aron pagkuha sa iyang bahin. ³⁵ Apan gidakop sa mga saop ang mga ulipon; gibunalan nila ang usa, ug ang usa ilang gipatay, ug ang lain pa gayod ilang gibato. ³⁶ Unya gipadala pa gayod niya ang laing mga ulipon nga labaw pa kadaghan kay sa unang gipadala, ug mao gihapon ang gibuhat sa mga saop kanila. ³⁷ Sa kataposan gipadala niya ang iyang anak. Miingon siya, ‘Sa walay duhaduha tahoron gayod nila ang akong anak.’ ³⁸ Apan sa dihang nakita sa mga saop ang anak, nag-ingnanay sila, ‘Ania ang anak sa tag-iya. Tana, patyon ta siya, ug maato na ang parasan!’ ³⁹ Busa siya ilang gidakop, gitaral ngadto sa gawas sa parasan, ug gipatay. ⁴⁰ “Karon, inig-abot sa tag-iya, unsa may iyang buhaton sa mga saop?” nangutana si Jesus. ⁴¹ Sila mitubag, “Sa walay duhaduha patyon niya kadtong mga tawong daotan, ug pasaopan niya ang parasan ug laing mga tawo nga makahatag kaniya sa iyang bahin sa abot sa hustong panahon.” ⁴² Si Jesus miingon kanila, “Wala ba kamo makabasa sa giingon sa Kasulatan? ‘Ang bato nga gisalikway sa mga magtutukod kay walay kapuslanan, nahimo hinuong bato nga labing importante. Buhat kini sa Ginoo, Ug kahibulongan gayod kini! ⁴³ Ug midugang si Jesus, “Busa sultihan ko kamo nga ang gingharian sa Dios kuhaon gikan kaninyo ug ihatag ngadto sa mga tawo nga makahatag ug maayong mga bunga.” Ang Ebanghelyo sa Ginoo.

KAHULOGAN SA EBANGHELYO (Mateo 21:33-43)

^33a Si Jesus miingon, “Pamati kamo ug laing sambingay.

Kitang nagpuyo niining modernong panahon naanad na sa daghang mga inpormasyon nga atong madungog adlaw-adlaw sa atong kinabuhi. Usahay dili na nato panumbalinggon ang mga inpormasyon nga moabot kanato. Apan karon si Jesus naghangyo kanato nga ato gayod kining paminawon.

^{33 b} May usa ka tawo nga yutaan nga nagtanom ug mga paras. Gikoral niya kini ug gikalotag lungag nga kasudlan sa giniok nga ubas, ug nagtukod siyag bantayan.

Ang mga naminaw ni Jesus nasayod kon kinsay iyang gipasabot sa usa ka tawo nga yutaan nga may parasan kay kini anaa man sa Daang Tugon (Isaias 5:1-7, Jeremias 2:21, Ezekiel 17:6, 19;10, ug uban pa).

Ang Ginoo naghago alang sa iyang parasan: pagdaro, pagkuha sa mga batoong bahin niini, pagpili og maayong kalidad sa tanum, sa pagtanum, sa paglabat niini, pagpahimutang og lungag nga kasudlan sa ubas, pagtukod og bantayan. Dili sayon. Apan kalipay usab sa panahon sa pag-ani!

^{33 bc} Unya gipasaopan niya ang iyang parasan ug milangyaw siya.

Ang Ginoo, dili nato kalimtan, mao baya ang naghago alang sa iyang parasan, una pa kini niya itugyan ngadto sa mga saop. Human diay sa iyang buluhaton, ang Ginoo mohatag og kahigayonan nga kini ikaduso ngadto sa mga tawo. Sa iyang pagsalig sa tawo, ang Ginoo mipanaw sa layong dapit!

May mga higayon nga magbagulbol kita sa pag-ingon: “Hain man ang Dios?” Ania diay ang tubag: Tungod sa iyang dakong pagsalig kanato, iya kitang gibiyaan. Sa ingon niana nahimo kitang iyang mga piniyalan! Ang Ginoo mao gayod ang tinuod nga tag-iya!

³⁴ Sa tingpamupo na sa ubas, gipadala niya ang iyang mga ulipon ngadto sa mga saop aron pagkuha sa iyang bahin.

Ang Dios mangita gayod sa iyang bahin! Bisan kon siya “milangyaw sa layong dapit” nagpabilin ang iyang bahin.

Apan usahay morag kita na hinoon ang hingpit nga tag-iya niini. Dili nato siya bahinan.

³⁵ Apan gidakop sa mga saop ang mga ulipon; gibunalan nila ang usa, ug ang usa ilang gipatay, ug ang lain pa gayod ilang gibato.

Timaan kini sa atong pagdumili sa paghatag og bahin sa Dios nga maoy tinuod nga tag-iya sa parasan nga iyang gipahulaman kanato. Tungod sa atong kalaog, nagdumili pa kita sa paghatag kon unsay angayan gayod kaniya.

³⁶ Unya gipadala pa gayod niya ang laing mga ulipon nga labaw pa kadaghan kay sa unang gipadala, ug mao gihapon ang gibuhat sa mga saop kanila.

Bisan pa sa atong pagdumili ang Dios naghatag pa usab og laing kahigayonan. Pagkamapailubon sa Dios! Tungod kay lagi buot gayod siya nga kita makaalingat ra sa kamatuoran ug unya mobuhat sa unsay angayan natong buhaton.

³⁷ Sa kataposan gipadala niya ang iyang anak. Miingon siya, ‘Sa walay duhaduha ta­horon gayod nila ang akong anak.’

Hilabihan ka lisod sabton. Human mapatay ang daghan nang mga pinadala, ngano kaha nga iya mang gipadala ang iyang mismong anak?

Apan mao kini ang punto ni Jesus. Ang Ginoo mohimog mga dili kasarangan o radikal nga panggibuhaton. Bisan gani ang iyang anak iyang gipadala pamasin nga ang mga katawhan maminaw kaniya ug sila mausab sa ilang dautang pamaagi ngadto sa kabag-ohan.

³⁸ Apan sa dihang nakita sa mga saop ang anak, nag-ingnanay sila, ‘Ania ang anak sa tag-iya. Tana, patyon ta siya, ug maato na ang parasan!’

Ang sala sa mga saop mao nga buot nilang hingpit nga angkonon ang mga bunga sa maong parasan. Mao kini ang dakong sayop kanato nga buot natong himoon ang kalibutan nga atong kaugalingon lamang. Nga dili nato ipalabot ang Ginoo sa pag-ugmad ug pagbuot niini.

³⁹ Busa siya ilang gidakop, gitaral ngadto sa gawas sa parasan, ug gipatay.

Sa tinuod nga kasaysayan mao kini ang nahitabo ni Jesus. Apan dili lamang nato sabton nga kini nahitabo na sa miaging panahon. Kay sa tinuoray nahitabo gayod kini hangtod sa atong panahon ug sa atong dapit.

Unsa mang paagiha nga atong gidakop, gipagawas gikan sa parasan ug gipatay si Jesus diha sa atong kinabuhi? Hinganli kuno!

⁴⁰ “Karon, inig-abot sa tag-iya, unsa may iyang buhaton sa mga saop?” nangutana si Jesus. ⁴¹ Sila mitubag, “Sa walay duhaduha patyon niya kadtong mga tawong daotan, ug pasaopan niya ang parasan ug laing mga tawo nga makahatag kaniya sa iyang bahin sa abot sa hustong panahon.”

Aduna diay gayoy adlaw sa paghukom. Andam ba kita sa pakigharong niini? Bisan pa kon napatay ang iyang Anak, magpabilin nga siya mao ang tag-iya!
