LGU-Tagb assists public schools’ blended learning

The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Tagbilaranan is assisting all the public schools in the city here in the conduct of the so called blended learning.

LGU Tagbilaran extends assistance to all public schools in the city through the provision of duplicators, collators, paper cutters, and printers. These pieces of equipment are being used in the printing of modules for the blended learning style of teaching and learning.

Financial assistance extended by the city to public schools is funded by the Special Education Fund (SEF).

The LGU of Tagbilaran has been consistently extending assistance to all the public schools in the City through the construction of additional school buildings and multi-purpose covered courts, providing laboratory equipment, and detailing of security guards in school premises, among others.

Prior to Mayor Yap’s assumption in office, the SEF was only pegged at P 25 million. This year, the SEF is now more than P 78 million.

The increase is largely attributed to the sound fiscal management of the City Government through the combined efforts of the City Treasurer, City Assessor, City Accounting, City Budget and the Business Permits and Licensing Office.

The revenue collection efficiency has led to the steady increase of Tagbilaran City’s local income, evidenced by the surge of funds allocated to SEF.

The more efficient revenue collection effort by the LGU is attested by the Bureau of Local Government Finance and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) through the conferment of the Seal of Good Financial Housekeeping to Tagbilaran City Government.

Meanwhile, the LGU continues its fight against Coronavirus disease (Covid) via the enforcement of strict health protocols, as the city also pushes for the provision of free reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), rapid antibody tests, personal protective equipment (PPEs) flu vaccines, vitamins, alcohol, face masks, and hand sanitizers, among others.

LGU employees participate in coastal clean-up

The photo collage shows city government of Tagbilaran employees engaging in the coastal clean-up activity. The city government has been pushing for environmental protection as one of the cornerstones of good governance.

Several employees from some offices of the local government unit (LGU) of Tagbilaran participate in the coastal clean-up drive as they scour coastal barangays in the city to rid the coasts of trash and also plant mangroves.

The Barangay Affairs and Constituency Office led by Alvin Acuzar, City Disaster and Risk Reduction and Management Office under Gerard Lavadia, City Accounting Office under Eleanor Beniga, and the Sangguniang Panlungsod led by City Vice-Mayor Jose Antonio Veloso participated in the largest volunteer drive event for the environment.

International Coastal Clean-Up Day, commemorated every 3rd Saturday of September, encourages people to rid beaches of the garbage.

The activity is also an occasion to raise awareness about preserving and protecting the world’s oceans and waterways.

The City Government has pledged to take part in the advocacy, through the City Agrivet Office (CAVO).

All department offices are enjoined to organize a clean-up and mangrove planting in the nine (9) coastal barangays in Tagbilaran City as assigned by the CAVO.

The department will have to provide its own provision for the activity.

City Agrivet Officer Dr. Genette Egos said there is a limit as to the number of participants to maintain social distancing and strict health protocols.

City Mayor John Geesnell Yap II said the purpose of the cleanup is to engage Tagbilaranons to remove trash and debris from the ocean and waterways, to identify the sources of the trash, and to change people’s behaviors that cause pollution.

“Our coasts provide the much-needed protection to residents living near the ocean by acting as a buffer against the high winds and waves of powerful storms. It also helps drive economic activity thru fishing or other water-based livelihood initiatives. Even amidst the pandemic, we will still be mindful of our priorities. Protecting the environment is still on top of our list”, Yap said.

The activity is one of the largest volunteer efforts in ocean conservation. It provides an opportunity to make a difference by getting rid of trash from our shorelines, rivers, lakes and waterways. The advocacy has definitely raised environmental awareness and provided information, which has guided and influenced governments, corporations and industries in developing smart solutions to solve ocean pollution.
