Bohol solon files bill to improve PCG’s capabilities
Bohol third district representative Kristine Alexie Tutor files a bill aiming to improve the capabilities of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), a report says. This report from the solon’s office was sent to The Bohol Tribune on Thursday, Nov. 19, 2020.
The lawmaker from the third district of the province believes that there is a need to make the PCG capable to face the challenges posed by the changing times.
In the same report, the representative said that enforcement of the country’s maritime laws can be more effective by gradually increasing the number of PCG field offices, bases, and facilities at a pace that is prudent and realistically affordable through the national budget and official development assistance.
It is also time for the country to deploy and operate microsatellites, smart buoys, and unmanned drones, she added.
The legislator from the town of Candijay believes that her bill, if it becomes a law, would enable the PCG to expand its coverage of strategic locations nationwide.
These solutions are contained in the bill seeking amendments to Republic Act 9993 also known as the Philippines Coast Guard Act of 2009.
House Bill (HB) 7865, which Tutor introduced at the House of Representatives, looks at giving a mandate to the Department of Transportation (DoTR) in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT), Department of National Defense (DND), and the Philippine Space Agency (PSA). to cause the creation, deployment, management, and operation of maritime microsatellites for specific multiple-purpose mission tasking consistent with the missions, roles, powers, and functions of the PCG.
Moreover, the DoTR may commission through open, transparent, and full-disclosure international bidding consistent with procurement laws, the creation, deployment, management, and operation of the maritime microsatellites.
The bill provides that each of the following islands and island groups to have at least two (2) Coast Guard bases, each with a basic complement of resources in terms of personnel, vessels, equipment, and support services to be determined by the Secretary of Transportation, upon recommendation of the PCG Admiral, and in consultation with the Civil Service Commission (CSC), Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and the DICT.
The island or island groups that need to have at least two (2) PCG bases are: the Batanes group of Islands; the Kalayaan Island Group; the Tawi-Tawi Islands; the Basilan Islands; the Dinagat Islands; the Polilio Islands; Catanduanes Island; Samar Island; Leyte Island; Bohol Island Province; Guimaras Island Province; Occidental Mindoro and adjacent islands; Oriental Mindoro and adjacent islands; Panay Island; Siquijor Island; Marinduque Island Province; Romblon Island Province; Masbate Island Province; and Camiguin Island Province.

Rep. Tutor distributes wheelchairs to 3rd district beneficiaries
Three (3) persons from the third district of Bohol each receive a wheelchair from the office of Rep. Alexie Tutor, a report from the solon’s office says.
The report, received by The Bohol Tribune on Nov. 19, 2020 bares that the .first beneficiary is JM Adame, a 3-year-old boy from Canlusong Valencia who is suffering from a birth defect. The second beneficiary is Brent Michael Lajato, 13, of Putlongcam, Alicia who has celebral palsy, and the third beneficiary is Nanay Socorro Cachero of Poblacion, Candijay.
“We can always make others happy. Wheelchair lang ni cya pero dli tanan maka afford ug palit ani. Ang mahatagan niini, dako na nilang kalipay” Cong. Alexie Tutor said.
Furthermore, she is thankful to those who are helping her continue with her cause to help others. According to her, these are the sponsors who wish to remain anonymous.
To date, there is already a total of 10 wheelchairs distributed to different beneficiaries from the 3rd district, the report adds.
