Key Information about Periodontal Plastic Surgery

Periodontal plastic surgery aims to restore form and function to the gum tissue, periodontal ligament, and the bone that helps support the teeth.

The goal of periodontal plastic surgery is to improve the lifespan of the teeth. This procedure will not cure for a periodontal disease.

People need to know that periodontal surgery removes the tissue that has been damaged by disease and then the gums are reconstructed to help bring better support for the teeth and restore a normal appearance.

So what is periodontal disease anyway?

When the gum tissue or gingival area is attacked by a disease, there could be changes that may happen with the bone.

Moreover, the dentist will find out the severity of periodontal disease by taking a look at “pockets” between the gum and tooth to determine the extent of the detachment through the use of x-rays.

The dentist will then discuss with you the different treatment options available. The treatments may range from lifestyle changes and even periodontal plastic surgery.

Conservative measures may not be able to help ease the impact of periodontal disease right after diagnosis.

While plastic surgery may help, it is best to know how to prevent the disease from ever happening or progressing. As the condition is detected, the dentist will try to convince how to improve one’s oral hygiene and to quit smoking. The dentist will recommend regular tartar removal as part of the hygiene program. Normally, removal of tartar is painless but in certain conditions pain killers may be needed to be taken for a few days.

Problems with the bite may be improved with periodontal surgery and prevent future problems. Prevention remains to be the best way to avert any damage that will cause periodontal disease. Daily brushing, flossing, and routine visits to the dentist will help prevent the problem from getting worse.
