Mayor Yap hands tuition fee subsidy to new City scholars

City Mayor John Geesnell Yap II hands tuition fee subsidy to the new batch of scholars of
Tagbilaran City. The scholarship program is part of the city government’s effort to help poor
but deserving students gain quality education.
A report from the City Media Bureau said the handing of tuition fee subsidy took place via a
virtual orientation session organized by the Barangay Affairs and Constituency Unit (BACU)
under Alvin Acuzar.
Moreover, Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Federated President Raul Aparicio joined the
virtual orientation.
About 667 new scholars received the tuition fee subsidy certificates for the first semester
worth P 10,000.
The amount of tuition fee subsidy given to scholars increased from P 5,000 to P 10,000 per
City Ordinance C-276 sponsored by City Councilor Joseph Bompat.
For this semester, the recipients of the tuition fee subsidy are: 45 students from the BIT
International College, 45 students from the Bohol Wisdom School, 5 students from Cristal-e
College, 179 students from the Holy Name University, 26 students from the PMI College,
244 students from the Tagbilaran City College, and 123 students from the University of
Bohol.
Aside from an increase in the amount of the tuition fee subsidy, the ordinance also
mandates additional incentives for scholars who are included in the Dean’s List and those
who will graduate from their respective courses with honors.
Scholars who are in the Dean’s List will receive P 5,000 in the form of subsidy given after
every semester, while those who graduate from their courses with Latin honors will receive
P 10,000 as an incentive.
The tuition fee subsidy will be directly released to the school, the report reveals.
Meanwhile, the same source of the report says that applications for the second semester
will start on Dec. 28, 2020. Some of the guidelines state that interested applicants will have
to be registered residents in the city and should have no failing grades. A General
Weighted Average of 80% for high school students is also required, while an average of 2.5
in the preceding semester is needed to qualify for students who are already in college.

Applicants should not be receiving other scholarship grants of the same nature. Only one
(1) scholarship grant will be given per family, and the recipient should not have any pending
criminal or administrative case.
Mayor Yap underscored the importance of focus and determination among students to
succeed in their pursuit for quality education.
“We are all convinced that education plays a great role in uplifting lives, a social equalizer.
That is why the City Government of Tagbilaran takes great premium in implementing
education programs. We really invest in giving education for the youth in the City. So, my
dear scholars, Tagbilaran City is investing in you and in your future, so do your part. We
are supporting you, because we believe in your capacity to succeed. I hope you will not
waste this opportunity, especially during this time of pandemic when there are so many
distractions and anxiety. I am encouraging you to study hard and focus your time in
completing your education”, Yap said.
