BMS president reveals new strain appearance is a natural occurrence, not deadlier than earlier strains

The president of the Bohol Medical Society (BMS) reveals that the appearance of a new strain of the virus causing the Coronavirus disease (Covid) is a natural occurrence and should be expected, as he explained the new strain is not a deadlier virus compared to earlier strains.

This is the explanation given by Dr. Jefferson Ong, the president of the BMS in a radio interview on Monday, Dec. 28, 2020, over Newsmakers Ug Uban Pa, hosted by Ardy Batoy and Gloria Araneta.

The doctor bared that the anxiety caused by the emergence of the new Covid virus strain is due to the hype created by the media.

In the same interview, he clarified that the appearance of a new strain of the virus is a natural occurrence as small components of the virus change over time as it moves from one host to another.

“It does not necessarily mean that it (the new virus) would be a worse virus or it would be a more deadly virus,” the BMS president explained in the same interview.

It was reported that a new strain of the virus causing the Covid appeared in the United Kingdom.

The SARS-CoV-2 is the virus that causes the Covid.

As a knee-jerk reaction to the news about the new strain, President Duterte ordered a travel ban on flights coming from the United Kingdom.

Moreover, Duterte also ordered the shelving of the pilot testing of the face-to-face classes in select parts of the country.
