Tutor tells DepEd to consider retrenched teachers as ALS mentors
Third district solon Kristine Alexie Tutor urges the Department of Education (DepEd) and the other education agencies to consider hiring of retrenched school teachers as mentors for the newly-minted Alternative Learning System (ALS) law.
She also reminded the said agencies to make sure the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the said law will have solid quality assurance and quality control mechanism.
To remember, Tutor is one of the authors of the new ALS law.
Furthermore, Tutor said the IRR must not be just a copy of the law itself. The IRR must go into the finer details of how the law must be faithfully executed.
She added that Grade 6 graduates who are non-readers, or could barely read or write, or have severe learning deficiencies should be given priority of the help through ALS in a program parallel to regular high school.
The DepEd needs to create an ALS Special Program for Augmented Learning for those with learning deficiencies.
This special program should have specially-trained teachers, the solon explained.
It is important to have students whose learning deficiencies already addressed before they can take high school classes, she emphasized.
Mentors from this special program can come from the laid off private school teachers whose schools have closed down.
Meanwhile, quality has been lacking in mainstream basic education especially in the conduct of blended learning.
She insists that the DepEd should take a closer look on its processes and find out how to improve the quality of the education system in the country.
