Information About Receding Gums
Receding gums happen when the margin of the gum tissue that surrounds the teeth wears away, or pulls back.
In this case, it is exposing more of the tooth, or the tooth’s root.
If receding gum occurs, “pockets,” or gaps, form between the teeth and gum line, which gives an opportunity for bacteria to multiply and may cause damage to the teeth and eventually may lead to tooth loss.
Receding gums could be a common dental problem. Gum recession can’t be easily noticed because it happens gradually.
Tooth sensitivity is the first sign of gum recession or the tooth may look longer than normal.
Typically, a notch can be felt near the gum line.
Never ignore a receding gum and always make sure to have a dentist take a look at the tooth so that problems can be prevented as early as possible.
There are a number of reasons that can cause your gums to recede such as periodontal diseases or bacterial infections, genetics, aggressive tooth brushing, lack of dental care, hormonal changes, smoking, grinding and clenching of the teeth, misaligned teeth, and body piercing of the lip or tongue.
Your dentist can help you find a solution to receding gums. The dentist will clean your teeth well to remove plaque and tartar that are present that will eventually cause gum problems.
Antibiotics also may be given to remove remaining harmful bacteria.
It is also possible the dentist will perform gum surgery to repair the damage.
The dentist can determine the best type of procedure to use on you based on your individual needs.
Again, see your dentist and take care of your teeth, as these are the best ways to prevent gum recession.
