Maintaining the health of your teeth is an important part of being healthy.
Many people may not know what type of dentist one should see.
It is best to know the common types of dentists out there that can help you with a specific dental health concern.
In general, there are seven types of dentists and they are: General Dentist, Pedodontist or Pediatric Dentist; Orthodontist; Periodontist; Endodontist; Oral Pathologist or Oral Surgeon and Prosthodontist.
The general dentist is the one you visit for regular teeth cleanings and routine dental exams.
The general dentist may also refer you to other types of dentists as the need arises.
General dentistry is one of the most common types of dentistry.
Now we talk about Pedodontists or Pediatric Dentists. They specialize in dental care and treatments for children and young people.
On the other hand, Orthodontists are specialists in teeth and jaw alignment, using wires, braces, retainers, and other devices.
We go now to Periodontists. Periodontists help treat and repair diseases and problems of the gums. It is possible for a general dentist to treat gum disease prevention, a periodontist will provide treatment for tissues damaged by serious gum disease.
The next type of dentist is the Endodontists. The Endodontists deals with issues with the nerve of a tooth. They can perform root canals that are needed when there is decay around the nerve of the tooth.
Oral pathologists and oral surgeons are the ones able to treat oral diseases pertaining to the teeth and jaw. They can perform surgery and may work closely with the ear, nose, and throat specialists (ENTs).
Moreover, Prosthodontists are the ones that repair teeth and jaw bones. They are the ones that perform cosmetic dentistry, or treatments to improve the appearance of teeth, and some of their services are teeth whitening and veneers. They also provide the patients with dentures, crowns and bridges.
Normally, your general dentist or physician will refer you to the right type of dentist depending on the need.
Make sure to see the general dentist at least once a year to clean the teeth and to check for oral health issues.
Getting a professional opinion will help you manage any possible issues before they become serious.
Set an appointment with the general dentist as soon as possible if you’re having pain in your mouth.
