Two (2) police officers reportedly are hospitalized due to suspected paralytic shellfish poisoning after allegedly consuming seafood locally known as “kuja”.

The police officers were hospitalized after eating the said seafood in an eatery at Cainggit Beach in barangay Booy on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2021.

The police officers are from Valencia and Inabanga towns and are temporarily assigned at the Tagbilaran City police station as part of the augmentation force.

The 2 officers showed symptoms of paralytic shellfish poisoning after consuming the said seafood and were rushed to a nearby hospital.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has issued a number of red tide bulletins regarding the presence of paralytic shellfish toxin in the waters between Tagbilaran City and Dauis. This means that harvesting shellfish in the area is prohibited.

However, fish caught in the area, as long as it is washed thoroughly, may be
consumed safely.
