Preventing Gum Disease

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection of the gums and affects the bone around your teeth.

This disease is caused by bacteria that may live on your teeth and in between the spaces of your teeth and gums.

If the bacteria are left untreated, it may lead to tooth loss.

Tooth loss may create a negative impact on one’s nutrition, speech, appearance, and overall health.

Gum disease is preventable and can be treated. as long as you are able to recognize the signs.

Like many diseases, early treatment and prevention can help reverse  the negative impact of gum disease.

Foul-smelling breath can be a sign of gum disease.  Red or swollen gums are also signs of gum disease. Bleeding or tender gums are possible signs of gum disease.

People who are having difficulty in chewing, loose or sensitive teeth or longer appearing tooth may be signs of gum disease.

It is important that you are able to access great dental help to manage oral health efficiently. Make sure to visit your dentist at least twice a year so that you can maintain good and healthy set of teeth.

When preventing gum disease, you need to have a good working relationship with your dentist. Of course, it helps to eat a healthy diet.

The dentist can help you detect any potential gum problem before the situation becomes worse.

At home, you need to ensure that you are able to practice good dental hygiene such as regular brushing, flossing and use of mouthwash.

Make sure to brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes, twice a day.

It is recommended to floss once a day and to stop using tobacco or tobacco products.

The dentist may recommend deep teeth cleaning to remove problems on the teeth, which may end up causing gum disease problems.

A deep cleaning usually involves a few dental visits. Each appointment will focus on a different sections of your mouth. Your dentist may need to numb your mouth before the cleaning. You may also need medication to manage any pain and prevent infection.
