A floating fish cage project, given by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and installed back in 2020, has provided earnings of P117,000 to a fishermen‘s group from Maribojoc town, according to a report by the Philippine News Agency (PNA).
In a statement dated May 3, 2021, BFAR-Bohol said that members of the Maribojoc Coastal Barangay Law Enforcers Association have gained the benefits of the floating fish cage given by the said agency after harvesting around 936 kilos of “bangus”.
The offshore fish cage served as a source of livelihood for the said association.
The association was given the fish cage as it is tagged as a marginalized fishermen’s group based in Bohol, the BFAR In its statement said.
BFAR-Bohol provincial director Candido Samijon said that the floating fish cage project was granted last year through the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) program of the Department of Agriculture and BFAR in Central Visayas.
The SAAD program aims to provide identified fishermen’s association to eventually manage its own fishery business.
Aside from the project, the BFAR also provided the association members training on modern fishing methods to be used on top of traditional fishing techniques.
