The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) reported in its latest bulletin dated June 11, 2021, that a red tide warning still prevails over Tagbilaran and Dauis waters.
In the same bulletin, BFAR said that the seawaters off the mentioned areas continue to be affected by red tide as these areas tested positive to contain paralytic shellfish poison beyond what is allowed by regulations.
The BFAR warns the public to avoid eating shellfish harvested in Tagbilaran or Dauis waters.
Moreover, the agency also warns vendors not to sell shellfish taken in the said affected waters.
Meanwhile fish and other seafood such as squid, shrimp, and crab caught in the said waters are safe to eat as long as they are properly washed prior to cooking.
The BFAR advises that internal organs of the seafoods should be removed prior to cooking to avoid any red tide poisoning.
Eating shellfish with red tide toxins may result in symptoms such as tingling of the tongue and the lips.
It could also lead to hospitalization if the symptoms become worse, according to reports.
