Gov. Arthur Yap with Vice Gov. Rene Relampagos and other provincial and local officials unveiled on Thursday, June 17, 2021, the Quincentennial Marker in Maribojoc town, according to a report by the Provincial Information and Media Relations office (PRIMER).

The marker is situated in the compound of the Punta Cruz watch tower in barangay Punta Cruz, Maribojoc.

The marker is part of the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Catholicism in the Philippines and the first circumnavigation of the world, the PRIMER in a report says.

According to reports, Punta Cruz played an important role in our history as this was the place where Sebastian del Cano, the person who continued the expedition started by Ferdinand Magellan, made a stopover before sailing off towards Europe and completed the first circumnavigation of the world.

Elcano escaped together with some crew members of the expedition after Magellan was killed by Lapu-lapu in Mactan in 1521, according to historical accounts.

Back in March 16, 2021, officials of the province held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Quincentennial Marker, the PRIMER report adds.

Other personalities who graced the said occasion were National Historical Commission of the Philippines chairperson Dr. Rene Escalante, National Museum director general Jeremy Barnes, first district board members Lucille Lagunay, Ricky Masamayor and Aldner Damalerio.

The local government officials of Maribojoc were also in attendance led by Maribojoc mayor Romulo Manuta and the officials of barangay Punta Cruz.
