Ombudsman suspends 7 police officers over alleged illegal arrest of suspects in killing of former Bien Unido mayor

The Ombudsman ordered the suspension of seven (7) police officers for three (3) months and two (2) days without pay.

These police officers are being suspected of illegally arresting three (3) suspects in the 2017 killing of former Mayor Gisela Boniel of Bien Unido town, reports say today, Aug. 10, 2021.

The Ombudsman ordered the suspension of Col. Jonathan Cabal, Sr. Master Sgt. Alexander Garcia, Master Sgt. Lloyd Garcia, Master Sgt. Angelo Nayve Avenido, Master Sgt. Ally Bornillo Jr., Cpl. Emmanuel Pagalan Jr. and Cpl. Frederic Enriquez.

The said police officers are assigned in the Police Regional Offices of Central Visayas and Eastern Visayas.

Reports say that the Graft Investigation and Prosecution Officer Myra dela Rama-Gargaceran found enough grounds to suspend the 7 police officers for simple misconduct.

The issue stems from the complaints filed by Bryan Sayson, Lobo Boniel, and Wilson Hoylar. These 3 persons claimed to have been arrested by the said police officers even if their names were allegedly not in the arrest warrant issued by the court.

Sayson, Boniel and Hoylar were arrested in Bien Unido on Aug. 16, 2017, reports bare.

The suspects alleged that the arrest warrant shown to them did not mention their names, however the police officers asserted that the 3 complainants were referred to as “John Does.”

In 2017, former Bien Unido mayor Gisela Boniel was allegedly murdered by her husband, former Bohol board member Niño Rey Boniel, and her body was reportedly dumped into the sea.

The former Board Member now faces parricide and kidnapping with serious detention.
