VG Rene, SP members laud Magsayo for scintillating victory

Vice Governor Rene Lopez Relampagos led the Sangguniang Panlalawigan in approving an en masse resolution that lauded Boholano boxer Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo following the latter’s victory in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Sunday morning, August 22, 2021.

In approving the resolution on Tuesday, August 24, VG Relampagos said that such victory is worthy of recognition as it gives inspiration to all inspiring sports enthusiasts to fulfill their dreams no matter how hard it is for nothing is impossible for a persevering mind and soul.

Relampagos is hopeful that more Boholanos will likewise bring honor to the province in whatever fields they have chosen.

Relampagos also assured Boholanos that the Provincial Government of Bohol (PGBh) has been supporting Boholano athletes through various programs and allocating funds for these programs.

Magsayo won by knockout against Mexican boxer Julia Ceja, with the fight, scheduled for 12 rounds, stopped on the 10the round. The fight was held at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

The said win made him the WBO international featherweight champion. He is now the number one contender for the WBC featherweight world title currently held by Gary Russell, Jr.

The 26-year-old Boholano boxing champion began boxing when he was just 8 years old, reports say.

Before he turned professional he had fought in around 200 amateur contests and was a 4-time amateur boxing champion in the Alliance of Boxing Associations of the Philippines (ABAP) national tournaments.

He is currently under the stable of MP Promotions of Sen. Manny Pacquiao.

He started training at the Wild Card gym in Los Angeles in July 2020. His first fight under the MP Promotions banner was the fight against Rigoberto Hermosillo on October 4, 2020. Magsayo won via a split decision in that fight.

Prior to his successful fight this month, Magsayo emerged victorious in the match against American boxer Pablo Cruz in April of this year.
