“Heart-wrenching choice. I received a message from a nephrologist colleague and it says ‘Bry! we only have 1 hemoperfusion cartridge left, but to whom should we give this to? To a 30-year-old male, to a 50-year-old mother, or to a 70-year-old grandfather? - from Richard Bongcac Tamsi: With due respect doc might as well give it to the one who is not so critical, the one who would most likely to survive if given the intervention. Why waste it to someone whom if given the intervention would die anyway. If we would consider our biases, I would give it to the 50 year old mom who is the breadwinner of five. If the 30 year old would die, he has still a wife who would recover 3 days after giving birth and who could look after their child. The 70 year old grandfather though could survive if given the intervention but he is prone to reinfection in the future due to comorbidities. The 50 year old presents the most win-win circumstances. If we could save the mother of 5 and a breadwinner at that, more lives would be benefited. #ethicomoralnursingpractice #maslow’sheirarchyofneeds
