Mark Magsayo Left His Heart in Tagbilaran City

by Kate Laquinta

Following his scintillating win over Julio Ceja, it seems that he is on his way to boxing superstardom.

Mark Magsayo shows his belts as he aims to capture a World Championship belt.

We are referring to the Boholano boxer Magsayo. Magsayo’s win was a jaw-dropping one as he was able to come back from a lackluster performance in the early rounds to finally put his opponent to slumber via a thunderous punch.

As he gains the limelight, Magsayo did not forget to mention City Mayor John Geesnell Yap II and his wife First Lady Jane Yap in his on the spot victory statement. He was appreciative of what the couple has positively done for him.

Magsayo who is now fighting under the MP Promotions stable of Sen. Manny Pacquiao, has become the number 1 contender in the featherweight division of the World Boxing Council (WBC).

This means he gains a shot at a world title and perhaps become another Filipino boxing world champion. If he becomes a world champion, he will be gaining access to fights with bigger pay days or even become the next Manny Pacquiao.

Magsayo’s path to stardom started to flourish once he became a member of Pacquiao’s stable of boxers.

But little did we know that Magsayo was able to gain access to the MP Promotions stable with the help of Mayor Yap and First Lady Jane.

In 2019, Magsayo asked Mayor Yap to secure an audience with Sen. Pacquiao. Due to commitments, Mayor Yap tasked First Lady Jane Yap to accompany Magsayo to meet Sen. Pacquiao.

At that time, Magsayo was having problems with his contract with another promoter.

Apparently, with the help of the Yaps, Magsayo finally found a home in MP Promotions and is now on his way to superstardom.

The First Lady also shared the information that even before the meeting with Sen. Pacquiao, the first couple of Tagbilaran has already been supportive of Magsayo. Mayor Yap has been watching Magsayo’s fights whenever he could especially during the time before the pandemic.

The City Government has supported to the hilt the fights of Magsayo which were held here in the city.

No doubt that, if ever he becomes the next Filipino boxing superstar, definitely Tagbilaran City will be etched in the boxing map.

Now that he has to continue reaching his goal to become a world champion, he needs to leave his heart in the city that nurtured him and continues to support him.

His eventual homecoming will be a sight to behold as he will be welcomed by throngs of fans, especially the first couple of Tagbilaran. His homecoming may not come any time soon, but surely he will be given a hero’s welcome by the City and its residents.

Born Jessel Mark Araula Magsayo, the Tagbilaran pride is the current World Boxing Organization International Featherweight champion.

The 26-year-old Magsayo, was born in Tagbilaran City, and the 3rd in a brood of 4.

Magsayo used to study at the Victoriano D. Tirol – Advanced Learning Center for his high school education.

He has been into boxing since he was 8 years old. He had an outstanding amateur boxing career before he turned professional.

Currently, he remains undefeated and the guy from Tagbilaran may be tagged as the next Paquiao. But, surely he wants to be known as the Magnificent boxer, who will be bringing honor to the city and the country.
