Boholana ship crew member dies in Oromoc sea mishap

A Boholana crew member was found dead while 15 other persons survived a sea mishap in Ormoc City, early Saturday morning, Sept. 25, 2021, reports say.

Reports add that the ship, MV Lite Ferry 3, a roll on-roll off passenger vessel, tilted on its starboard side and took in water causing it to capsize.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) identified the lone fatality as a certain Raquel Alo, 33, of Balilihan town.

The remains of the victim are now in a funeral parlor in Ormoc City, according to reports.

The PCG said the victim’s body was found pinned down by several cargoes, shortly before dawn on Saturday.

“Danilo Lines Inc. regret to announce that one of its vessels, M/V Lite Ferry 3, encountered an incident at the Port of Ormoc City moments after its arrival at the said port. At the moment, the vessel is partially submerged in the water. The company, together with the Philippine Coast Guard is still trying to investigate the cause of the incident. There were no passengers on board the vessel but was loaded with cargo,” the statement of Lite Shipping Corporation said and was posted on the company’s social media page.

The company in its statement adds, “To our valued shippers and customers, we will be deploying a replacement vessel starting tomorrow to take the Cebu City to Ormoc City route.”

According to reports, the said vessel left Ouano Wharf in Mandaue City late Friday evening, Sept. 24, 2021, for Ormoc City.The survivors are now in the hands of the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office of Ormoc City, the PCG said.

As of this writing, the cause of the incident is currently under investigation.
