A Good Leader

At some point in our lives, we all had a relationship with someone who greatly changed the way we look at life. Someone who inspired – motivated us – who truly stood for something he believes. This person taught us the process of choosing the right leader.

The criterion in selecting a good political leader is vague. A leader may be selfless, devoted, courageous, humble and a visionary.  We must be able to recognize the characteristics of a good leader so that we can freely embrace him when he shows up. When people sincerely believe in a good leader, they are eager to accept his vision and would be inspired to accomplish far more than they could have on their own.

A true leader must be a living example of his teachings. When we see that a leader’s personal life embodies his philosophy, we too are inspired to learn that philosophy. Conversely, if we see that a leader does not live by his own words, then we cannot trust him. A true leader does not want followers; he wants to teach others how to be future leaders. He does not want to control others; instead, he wants to guide people to the right path. He does not impose his leadership on others, nor does he take away anyone’s autonomy. He inspires by love, not coercion.  A good leader is passionate about people’s welfare that when they consult and seek guidance, he points them to the right path.

We need to think about these things especially when we are about to select leaders in the 2019 elections. For me, a true leader does not dare break any rule even the slightest one. A good leader is a good example that does not buy votes.

Let us cleanse our culture from the stains of vote buying that crushes the chances of the poor yet deserving candidates. Let us break the culture that voters expect money during election period. We have election laws against vote buying but are rarely imposed. We can’t rely on the authorities since they are undermanned and some are politically connected. The solution should come from disciplined voters who have the dignity and courage to resist and reject any form of vote buying.

Vote buying is a Band-Aid solution to people’s hunger. When we select a wrong leader, we as citizens will suffer and wait until the end of that official’s term. When will we ever learn? If we let our vote be bought then we will suffer the same fate all over again.

When someone says that we will just accept the money from a candidate but still vote for the right one, it is still morally incorrect. If we keep on doing this, we are not contributing to the solution. The ultimate thing to do is to not vote for whoever candidate who buys our vote.

In order to eradicate vote buying, the government should address the root cause of the trend which is poverty. Ultimately, Voters should think of their children’s future before writing the name of their chosen candidate. Change is in our hands. It’s time to reverse our hypocritical ways and do the right thing.
