The Department of Agriculture-Philippine Carabao Center (DA-PCC) at the Ubay Stock Farm (USF), joins hands with the DA-Philippine Coconut Authority (DA-PCA) for a project that has been tested and proven to increase farmer family incomes in Bohol and contribute to local nutrition initiatives.
Under the Coconut-Carabao Development Program, coconut farmers who are now affected by the low market prices of copra and low copra yield can make up for the lost income by adopting the alternative income source program, PCCBohol Center Chief Dr. Dinah Loculan said.
During her guesting at the Kapihan sa PIA radio program, the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) said Dr. Loculan who came along with consultant Edilberto Macalandag, explained that the CCDP aims to provide additional income options to coconut farmers by providing them sustainable livelihood and business opportunities.
The program is enabled by introducing the carabao and its long line of carabao-based agri-business opportunities to coconut farmers.
This way, coconut farmers are able to contribute in the stability of the local supply of dairy products sourced from carabaos. At the same time, help in the nutrition program of the government.
The PIA says that Bohol is a leader in terms of producing locally-sourced dairy products that are being used for the nutrition program of young Boholano children.
The Department of Education (DepEd) and Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) are using carabao’s milk as the staple drink for the nutrition program for young kids in Bohol.
