The City Youth Development Office (CYDO) has conducted a seminar workshop among the youth in Tagbilaran City, which discussed a wide range of topics from good journalism to maximizing social media. Speakers from various fields were invited to equip and capacitate the youth, the report from the City Media Bureau says.

According to CYDO Coordinator Marbert Remolador, the youth have the strongest potential to curb the spread of fake news on social media.

“With this pandemic, the youth were given a huge screen time, from conducting their classes online to leisurely surfing the internet. They are potentially exposed to misinformation and disinformation. If we could train them how to manage their internet use to the best of their advantage, they will be a strong force that can curb the spread of fake news,” Remolador said.

Tagbilaran City First Lady Jane Yap graced the occasion and encouraged the youth to take a proactive role in using the internet.

“The landscape has indeed changed. The internet becomes a powerful tool to be informed, but it can also serve as a gateway to a lot of evils. Thus, I really challenge you to become your own editor, the lines are not defined nowadays, everybody can create a content. Be critical in what you share or post. Let’s all be responsible and fight for the truth,”Jane Yap said.
