Things to Know about Cosmetic Dentistry

(Part 5)

What else does a cosmetic destist do?
A cosmetic dentist provides a service called bite reclamation.

A patient may be in need of the cosmetic dentistry service known as bite reclamation. This service is for people who suffer from an altered bite on the vertical dimension, which could be caused by acid reflux or bruxism.

These things may lead to a shorter smile.

This kind of service is supposed to help patients reclaim the former bite or improve the existing bite. The dentist will fix if you have an overbite or an underbite.

The cosmetic dentist will open up your bite and fix your smile in the process.

Another service rendered by a cosmetic dentist is the reshaping of the teeth, when shape needs to be corrected. The dentist will strategically remove parts of the enamel in ways that improve tooth appearance and aesthetics.

This usually happens when the denist is correcting small chips or cracks on the tooth without putting in resin to cement.

Tooth reshaping is also known as odontoplasty, enameloplasty, which involves the stripping, slenderizing, and recontouring of a tooth.

A patient can use reshaping as a means to fix teeth positioning, thus making it an alternative for braces in some situations.

If a person has teeth that are crooked, bent, or too long, you can use this service to change the position, shape, or length of the teeth.

One can also have a dentist reshape the teeth to make them more even in case you’re dealing with teeth size differenced.

Remember that once enamel is removed, you can’t replace it—tooth filling material is weaker than enamel—and it may expose the dentin at times.

We will be discussing more services of cosmetic dentists in our next column.
