First District Representative Edgar Chatto filed on January 24, 2022 Resolution No. 2466 congratulating and commending Jessel Mark “Magnifico” Magsayo after winning the World Boxing Council (WBC) world featherweight championship in New Jersey just a day earlier.
A native of Tagbilaran City, Magsayo emerged as world featherweight champion following a majority decision win over Gary Russell, Jr. at the Borgata Hotel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey in the United States.
According to Chatto, Magsayo gives the necessary lift to the Filipino spirit in the midst of the pandemic and the devastation of parts of the Visayas and Mindanao region due to typhoon Odette.
Magsayo did not only halt Russell’s WBC featherweight championship reign. He also gave Russel his second boxing career loss.
Russell was WBC featherweight champion for nearly 7 years and was the longest-reigning male champion in boxing before being deposed by Magsayo.
Meanwhile, Magsayo holds on to his perfect 24 – 0 record, 16 of which are by way of knockout.
He joins the pantheon of active Filipino boxing champions Rene Cuarto, Jerwin Ancajas, John Riel Casimiro, and fellow Bol-anon Nonito Donaire.
Magsayo began boxing when he was 8 years old. By the time he turned professional he had fought in around 200 amateur
contests and was 4-time amateur boxing champion at the annual Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines national tournaments.
