What is Deltacron?

This week, allow me to discuss a timely topic involving a new variant called Deltacron.
The Deltacron is a Coronavirus disease (Covid) virus variant that contains genes from the Delta and Omicron variants.
The Deltacron variant emerges when a person gets infected by
the Delta and Omicron variant at the same time.
A Deltacron is the product of Omicron and Delta variants that will replicate in the same person and in the same cell – a process called recombinant. A recombinant is common occurrence among viruses
It is expected that Deltacron will not be the last case of recombinant among Covid viruses.
The Deltacron variant has been detected since the start of 2022.
It is said that Deltacron has been detected in several countries such as the UK, France, US, Netherlands and Denmark.
So far, there is not enough data in terms of vaccine efficacy against this new variant.
For now, there is not enough data on the level of severity if a person gets infected by the Deltacron.

It is expected that more recombinant Covid virus will be in circulation if more people remained unvaccinated.
We will just hope that this recombinant variant is less severe compared to its parent virus.
Based on initial findings, it has been shown that the Deltacron’s growth rate is not alarming, but it is too early to say that this new variant is benign.
To protect oneself, please observe minimum health protocol and get vaccinated. These remain as the best ways to protect oneself against the virus or to prevent the formation of another recombinant Covid virus.
