VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
Violence Against Women (VAW) continues to be a major social and public health issue affecting thousands of women not only in the Philippines but in the whole world.

Violence Against Women is associated with unequal power relations between men and women which are greatly influenced by the patriarchal and masculine culture of society.
Statistics show that 45% of women are slapped, kicked and beaten; 75% of battered women try to commit suicide; 55% of women perceive violence as normal part of their marriage and 77% of men felt their masculinity threatened if their wives did not listen to them.
Emotional Violence is the most common type of spousal violence.

GENDER EQUALITY AND WOMEN’S RIGHTS
The progress towards gender equality is looking bleak. But it doesn’t need to. A new global analysis of progress on gender equality and women’s rights shows women and girls remain disproportionately affected by the socioeconomic fallout from the Coronavirus disease (Covid) pandemic, struggling with unbalanced high job and livelihood losses, education disruptions and increased burdens of unpaid care work.

Women’s health services, poorly funded even before the pandemic, faced major disruptions, undermining women’s sexual and reproductive health. And despite women’s central role in responding to Covid including as front-line health workers, they are still largely bypassed for leadership positions they deserve.
Throughout the history of mankind, the role of women has been extremely pivotal in the development of the human race.

At present, the progress of the nation is determined by the high positions of the women in the society in terms of employment and work. It is said that without the contribution of the women in the political, business, social, economic and national activities, the growth of the country will stagnate. In the past, the women were more accustomed to working in homes and taking care of children but now they are stepping into the outside world due to advances in education for women and increasing awareness.
The modern world has resulted in earnings, wages and salaries for the women similar to that of men, but women are continuously facing inequalities in the work force. This can be attributed to the pre-established notion that women shall not be given access to finance or communication with the world outside of the home which is highly unethical and unfair.

In the past, women were considered as the underprivileged ones which were not taught of having equal rights but this fact has changed now.

The status of women can be explicitly defined as the equality and the freedom of the women.
As we celebrate the month of women, let us free ourselves from the chains that imprison us. Let us educate ourselves and others to respect our position in the society – as equals of men in the journey to progress.
Give. But don’t allow yourself to be used. Love. But don’t allow your heart to be abused. Trust. But don’t be naïve. Listen. But don’t lose your own voice.
Cheers to Strong Women! May we Know them. May we Be them. May we Raise them!
