Things You Need to Know about Tooth Abscess (Part 3)

Allow me to discuss with you this week, the types of dental abscess as we continue the series.

Generally, there are three types of dental abscess.

As touched upon earlier, here are the three dental abscess types: gingival abscess, periodontal abscess, and periapical abscess.

The abscess type will determine the location and severity of the condition’s symptoms.

Gingival abscess is a type of abscess with the pus forming only in the tissue of the gums.

This means that it doesn’t impact the periodontal ligament or the tooth, which makes treatment easy.

Periodontal abscess is one which begins in the supporting bone tissue structures of the tooth.

It may be one of the symptoms of severe periodontal disease just as gingival abscess means a patient may have gingivitis. Periapical abscess usually starts in the soft pulp of the tooth.

Once the tooth root and nerves are damaged, the treatment may either involve a root canal therapy or remove the tooth completely.

Next week we will discuss the treatments and prevention of tooth abscess in our next column.
