Chatto thinks 2023 is the right time to stage brgy., SK polls

First District Rep. Edgar Chatto

First District Rep. Edgar Chatto thinks that if ever there would be moves to postpone the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, it should be done in 2023.

This was the statement of the solon in an interview with reporters at the sidelines of the inauguration of incoming Dauis vice mayor Marietta Sumaylo on June 20, 2021.

He said that any moves to postpone the barangay and SK elections should have the blessing of incoming President Marcos Jr.

The postponement will depend on whether or not the incoming president is willing to move the barangay and SK elections, Chatto mentioned.

If there are no changes, the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections are slated on Dec. 5, 2022.

Chatto emphasized that he has opposed having two elections in one year. The country just concluded the local and national elections in May 2022.

“Daan pa sauna nga giaprobahan kanang paghimo sa barangay elections sa 2022, dili ko sang-ayon nga dunay election in one year,” Chatto told the media.

Moreover, he added that having 2 elections in one year could be a handful for some government agencies, particularly the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

Chatto stressed that moving the polls to 2024 is not ideal because it is too close to the 2025 local and national elections.

In Chatto’s view, most of the congressmen are also keen in postponing the 2022 barangay and SK elections.

It was reported that, 3rd District Cong. Kristine Alexie Tutor, also expressed support to postpone the barangay and SK elections.
