Things to Know about Tooth Pericoronitis (Part 1)

This week, allow me to start a new topic, which is about Tooth Pericoronitis.

Tooth Pericoronitis is a disorder involving the gums surrounding a wisdom tooth.

When this particular area of the gums swell and get inflamed due to an infection or because of something happening to the third and final set of molars, patients get in their early twenties or late teens, then it is possible the patient is suffering from pericoronitis.
This problem could be due to partial wisdom teeth impaction and/or poor dental hygiene.

Most pericoronitis patients have a flap of gum tissue that partially covers the crown of the

erupting wisdom tooth or teeth, thus causing the bacterial spread infection.
We will be having a deep dive on this problem on our next column.
