Things to Know about Tooth Pericoronitis (Part 4)

This week, let’s talk about how a dentist would treat pericoronitis.

The dentist will mostly take into consideration a number of factors when making a decision on how to treat pericoronitis.

Your three treatment choices include the following.

a.) Removal of the wisdom tooth itself

b.) Removal of the flap covering the impacted wisdom tooth

c.) Pain management of the infected gums

Pericoronitis involves the removal of the flap developed from wisdom teeth impaction.

The dentist might even look at the best course of action which is the treatment of the symptoms. This happens when the impacted wisdom tooth is hard to remove.

Here are some remedies for pericoronitis:

1.) Saltwater rinses may help if the pain hasn’t spread; using hot compress may also help.

2.) Use medicines to treat fever if it develops. It would help to contact the dentist if you develop fever as a result of pericoronitis.

3.) Another home remedy is the use of mouthwash to kill the bacteria that may cause the infection to become worse.

4.) Flossing and brushing will help improve the hygiene of the mouth and remove the bacteria that can make the situation worse.

Of course, it would be best to check with your dentist when you have this particular dental condition.

Let’s find out the outlook of pericoronitis in our column next week.
