All SIM (Subscriber identity Module) cards need to be registered soon. This instruction comes after President Marcos Jr. signed the SIM registration bill into law on Oct. 10, 2022.
The new law is the first piece of legislation the president signed into law.
The new law mandates the collection of data of SIM card owners to prevent criminal activities and unsolicited text messages.
After the signing of the law, implementing rules and regulations will be issued in order to guide the public on how to register their existing SIM cards.
The rules will also determine when a SIM card should be registered to prevent deactivation.
All existing SIM cards that will not be registered may be deactivated by telecoms companies, as mandated by law.
All new SIM cards purchased need to be registered with the telecoms company by providing personal information and a copy of a valid ID prior to activation.
The data collected will be kept confidential and the release of such information will be allowed only if there is a court order, reports say.
