BSK election reset gives Comelec ample time to get ready

Atty. Eliseo Labaria

The postponement of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) to October of next year is an opportunity for the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to be more ready for the conduct of the polls.

Comelec Bohol chief Eliseo Labaria shared with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) about his thoughts regarding the postponement of the BSKE.

To recall, On Oct. 10, 2022, President Marcos Jr. signed a bill into law, postponing the BSKE from December 2022 to October 2023.

Labaria said that the poll body can use the extra time to ensure that the protocol seeking to protect the voters from the Coronavirus disease (Covid) will be in place.

The postponement also helps those who want to run for barangay positions as it provides time for aspirants to have a lengthy campaign, according to some observers.

Reports say that the Comelec was about 70% ready for the elections until President Marcos Jr. signed the law which postpones the BSKE, reports say.
