G-6-PD Deficiency (Part 2)

Individuals with G-6-PD deficiency are advised not to be exposed to the following:

1. Antimalarial drugs

2. Sulfonamides

3. Nitrofurans

4. Sulfonamides

5. Antipyretics- Analgesics like acetylsalicyclic acid, antipyrine and aminopyrine

6. Other agents:

– Vit K in large doses

– naphthalene 

– Chloramphenicol

– Probenecid

– tonic drinks

– beans and legumes

7. Infections like respiratory viruses, infectious hepatitis, bacterial pneumonias

Hemolysis can appear in all age groups. This is a sex-linked deficiency which means that females are considered carriers and the disease become manifest in affected males. There is no available treatment, thus avoidance of causative factors is of utmost importance. This is another reason why parents should submit all their newborn babies for newborn screening test.
