Bohol swine growers stand to profit more if province remains ASF-free

Bohol swine growers stand to profit a lot if the province keeps its status of African Swine Fever (ASF)-free.

According to reports, the province’s swine growers may take advantage of higher pork prices as the Luzon market looks at Visayas and Mindanao as source of pork.

However, the shorter supply of pork here may lead to higher prices to the detriment of Boholano consumers, based on the observation of former Cooperative Development Authority (CDA) administrator Benjie Oliva.

It has been observed by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), that from P119 per kilo average price of pork’s live weight in 2021 the average live weight price of local pork is now P250 per kilo.

For backyard swine growers, the prices rose from P195 per kilo in January 2021 to PP320, or an increase of P125 per kilo as noted last month.

The swine producers in the province stands to gain more profit if pork coming from Bohol remains ASF disease free.

In the Visayas, while Central Visayas, Cebu, Bohol, Negros oriental and Siquijor have remained ASF free as close monitoring and control is needed to ensure ASF problem does not spread in these areas.
