Myths vs facts on mRNA Covid vaccines

There are plenty of myths circulating around, especially on social media, regarding messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccines such as Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

It is only fitting to let the people know the facts about the mRNA vaccines and also to debunk the myths about these types of vaccine.

MYTH: The mRNA vaccine can alter women’s fertility.

The FACT is that this type of Covid vaccine has no effect on women’s fertility. The truth is that the vaccine will encourage our body to create spike protein of the virus so it can prime our immune system to fight the virus that contains the said spike protein.

MYTH: There is no need to get the mRNA vaccine for people who were infected with Covid.

The FACT is that science suggests that Covid infection will only give you transient immunity to the virus. The risk of getting re-infection is two times higher compared to those people who were infected but are vaccinated. The quality of Immunity that we get from the vaccine is higher than the immunity we get from natural infection.

MYTH: This myth has something to do with the issue on safety and efficacy of vaccines. It says that vaccines are compromised because they were developed in a short period of time.

The FACT is that Chinese scientists shared information about the virus promptly so other researchers could start making the vaccines. Resources provided to make the vaccines were in abundance because nations around the world invested in research and paid for the vaccines even if they were still in development. Many scientists are also engaged as study volunteers so vaccines can be created at the soonest possible time.

There were companies making vaccines even before Food and Drug Administration‘s (FDA) approval. This explains why there are plenty of stocks of vaccines before the emergency use authorizations (EUA) were given by the FDA.

MYTH: Many people say: “I have been vaccinated, therefore, I can stop wearing the mask and ditch coronavirus precautions.”

The FACT is: The U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention still advises vaccinated individuals to wear the mask and follow the set of health protocols, in order to have a small chance of getting infected or a small chance of infecting other people who are unvaccinated.

MYTH: The vaccine can cause covid-19 infection.

The FACT remains that the vaccine can’t cause Covid-19 infection. The FACT further says that the vaccine will instruct your body to produce protein that resembles spike protein of the virus. Spike protein is just a part of the virus and not a full viral particle

MYTH: The side effects of the vaccine are deadly.

The FACT is: side effects of the vaccine are only limited to such symptoms such as headache, fever, body malaise and rashes which will only last for 1-2 days.

MYTH: The Covid-19 vaccine changes your DNA.

The FACT is: It is not true that the vaccine will destroy your deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). The FACT says that the vaccine is designed to boost or stimulate your immune system to fight coronavirus. Yes, it enters into your cells but NOT TO THE NUCLEUS where the human DNA is found

In our next issue, I will debunk more myths about vaccines to help educate those who remain at the sidelines, and are still hesitant to get the jabs.
