From the Outside Looking In

CHRISTMAS IN OUR HEARTS

by Donald Sevilla

Christmas is a time for reflection and of deep introspection for the things we have done in the year past and the things we must do for the year incoming.

It is a time to ponder the things we did and resolve to make things better. While it marks the start of a joyous season and  the onset of a holiday break from our usual hectic pace, it is a time to be thankful for all the blessings we have had.

Christmas is seen as a time of gift-giving and sharing. Christians celebrate Christmas to commemorate Christ’s birth and emulate His selfless teachings.

Majority around the world celebrate Christmas in one way or another over a broad spectrum that borders from the spiritual to the mundane. Through the years Christmas has evolved into a huge commercial extravaganza responsible for brisk retail sales.

For this reason while it brings merriment and a festive atmosphere to those who can, those who cannot may feel deprived and lonely. Those who cannot afford the basic necessities, more so the luxuries in life deserve our generosity especially during these difficult times.

The pandemic has given us valuable lessons at handling our finances and economy. It gave us the knock on the head to realize that material possessions in this world are temporary and fleeting.

Thus at a time of economic difficulty, it is only fitting that we celebrate Christmas with empathy while imbibing its true Christian spirit. While Christmas is a time for family, it is also a time of concern for others.

The unselfish teachings of Christ and the noble and humble life of that baby born in the manger should give us all,  hope and inspiration. Through Him we should strive to be instruments of the good news imbued with the true spirit of Christmas.
