Bohol Tightens ASF Surveillance in Ports

The Provincial Government of Bohol is taking measures to prevent the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) by deploying sniffing dogs in Panglao Airport and four seaports in the province.

From January to March 2023, Veterinary Quarantine Inspectors and ASF Sniffing Dogs confiscated 88.5 Kg of frozen/raw pork, 481.52 Kg of pork products, and 275.45 Kg of cooked pork.

The pork products include chicharron, chorizo, hotdog, longganisa, siomai, pork ham, pork hopia and pork dumpling while the cooked pork includes humba, letchon, adobo, lumpia, crispy pata, fried pork, pork siopao, grilled pork, pork menudo, pork empanada, pork paksiw, pansit with pork, pork embutido, pork bola-bola and pizza with ham.

African Swine Fever (ASF) is a highly contagious and deadly swine disease that can affect both farm-raised and feral (wild) pigs.

It is caused by the African swine fever virus (ASFV), a large, double-stranded DNA virus in the Asfarviridae family.

The virus causes a hemorrhagic fever with high mortality rates in domestic pigs; some isolates can cause death of animals as quickly as a week after infection. ASF doesn’t infect people.
