The Department of Agriculture (DA) and partner government agencies are preparing for the upcoming El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to start in June.

5The El Niño is a weather pattern that brings warmer-than-average temperatures and less rainfall to the Philippines. This can lead to drought, crop damage, and food shortages.

The DA has convened a meeting of partner agencies to discuss their plans for mitigating the effects of El Niño. The agencies have agreed to work together to:

  • Provide farmers with drought-resistant seeds and fertilizers.
  • Provide financial assistance to farmers who have been affected by drought.
  • Promote water conservation measures.
  • Monitor the weather and provide early warning of El Niño-related disasters.

The DA is also working with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) to track the progress of El Niño. PAGASA has forecast that El Niño will be moderate this year. However, the DA is preparing for the worst-case scenario.

The DA is confident that it can mitigate the effects of El Niño with the help of partner agencies. The agency is committed to ensuring that there is a stable and affordable food supply for all Filipinos.
