Freedom and its price

Long before the Philippines became an independent state,
the fight for freedom from our colonizers was a struggle tainted
with the blood of our forefathers.
Tomorrow marks the 125 th year that Filipinos have been
enjoying freedom as an independent country. In the international

community, we are considered an independent state because we
have our own government that runs the affairs of our country
within the confines of our national territory under a duly ordained
constitution.
As a people, we have a shared vision beautifully crafted
under the Preamble of the 1987 Constitution. As a sovereign
Filipino people, we aspire to build a just and humane society, and
establish a Government that shall embody our ideals and
aspirations, promote the common good, conserve and develop
our patrimony, and secure to ourselves and our posterity, the
blessings of independence and democracy under the rule of law
and a regime of truth, justice, freedom, love, equality, and peace.
Although we were freed from the Spaniards and the
Americans more than a hundred years ago, it may take years
before we can fully reap the fruits of the struggles of our fallen
heroes.
The gap between the rich and the poor remains wide, with
the government having difficulty reducing the incidence of
poverty in the entire country. While we may be far from what we
aspire for, we find solace in the fact that our rights as citizens are
adequately protected. This fact alone is a worthy cause for
celebrating our independence.
Happy independence day!
