Ubay, Bohol – A milestone in the province’s energy sector was achieved on September 17, 2023, as Ubay Power Corporation (UPC), a subsidiary of Alsons Power Group, held a groundbreaking ceremony for its 95.2-megawatt (MW) In-Island Baseload Back-up Power Plant in Barangay Imelda, Municipality of Ubay, Bohol.
The project, which is expected to be completed by 2025, aims to provide Bohol with a stable, reliable, and sustainable source of electricity that will support the region’s economic growth and development.
The power plant will also enhance the province’s energy resilience, mitigate power interruptions, and contribute to the national government’s efforts to provide clean and efficient energy solutions.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by the senior management of Alsons Power Group led by their Chairman & President Nicasio I. Alcantara and Executive VP and CEO Tirso G. Santillan, as well as esteemed officials from the Provincial Government of Bohol represented by Vice-Governor Dionisio Victor Balite and Municipal Government of Ubay headed by Mayor Constantino H. Reyes.
In his speech, Alcantara expressed his gratitude to the local government units and the community for their support and cooperation in making the project possible.
He also reiterated his company’s commitment to delivering quality service and ensuring environmental responsibility.
“We are honored to be part of Bohol’s journey towards energy security and sustainable development. We assure you that we will uphold the highest standards of efficiency, safety, and environmental stewardship in building and operating this power plant,” he said.
Balite, on behalf of Governor Erico Aristotle Aumentado, lauded the project as a significant achievement for the province and the country.
He also thanked Alsons Power Group for choosing Bohol as their partner in advancing the power sector.
“This project is a testament to our vision of making Bohol a prime destination for investment and tourism. We are grateful to Alsons Power Group for trusting us and sharing our goals. We look forward to working with them in bringing more progress and prosperity to our province and our people,” he said.
Reyes, meanwhile, welcomed the project as a boon for his municipality and the neighboring towns.
He also expressed his confidence that the power plant will bring positive impacts to the local economy and environment.
“This project is a blessing for us in Ubay and the whole province of Bohol. We are excited to see how this power plant will improve our quality of life and create more opportunities for our people. We are also hopeful that this project will promote environmental awareness and conservation among our stakeholders,” he said.
The 95.2MW In-Island Baseload Back-up Power Plant is one of the several projects that Alsons Power Group is undertaking in various parts of the country.
The company is also developing a 105MW coal-fired power plant in Zamboanga City, a 14.5MW run-of-river hydroelectric power plant in Sarangani Province, and a 42MW diesel power plant in General Santos City.
