Panglao Mayor orders Korean restaurant to explain alleged discrimination against local customer

Panglao, Bohol – The mayor of Panglao, Edgardo “Boy” Arcay, has issued a notice to the management of a Korean restaurant in Barangay Danao, asking them to explain why they should not face sanctions for allegedly discriminating against a local customer.

The notice was sent on Sept. 19, 2023, after a Facebook post by the customer went viral.

The customer claimed that she and her companions were barred from entering the restaurant and told to eat outside, away from their Korean guests.

The customer expressed her disappointment and frustration over the incident, saying that she felt humiliated and disrespected.

She also questioned the legality of the restaurant’s policy, which she said violated the rights of Filipinos in their own country.

Mayor Arcay said that he was alarmed by the complaint, which he said was unacceptable and contrary to the values of Panglao.

He said that Panglao prides itself of being a welcoming community that values respect and inclusivity.

The mayor said that ensuring that both residents and visitors alike feel valued and treated with dignity is a priority of his administration.

He also reminded the restaurant management that they are operating under a business permit issued by the local government, which requires them to comply with the laws and regulations of the country.

Arcay warned them that any violation of these rules could result in the suspension or revocation of their permit.

He gave the restaurant management 48 hours to submit their written explanation, after which he will decide on the appropriate action to take.

Mayor Arcay also urged other business establishments in Panglao to observe fair and ethical practices, and to respect the rights and dignity of all customers, regardless of their nationality or ethnicity.
