Balilihan marks 195th Sumad with festivities

Balilihan, a promising town in Bohol province, celebrated its 195th founding anniversary or Sumad on September 29, 2023. The town was declared a special non-working public holiday for the month of September by Republic Act 9706 in 2009.Balilihan local government unit (LGU), led by Mayor Pureza Chatto and Vice Mayor Trisha Chatto, organized various activities to commemorate the occasion. On September 28, the event commenced with the opening of the Agro Fair and Painit Festival at the municipal complex. Sumad festival featured agricultural and food products from different barangays, as well as festival king and queen candidates wearing costumes made of local indigenous materials. A Larong Pinoy and a musical entertainment by Artshen Duo were also part of the festivities.On the Foundation Day, a thanksgiving mass was held at the Assemblyman Eladio I. Chatto Sports and Cultural Center. It was attended by Bohol First District Rep. Edgar Chatto, Bohol Governor Aris Aumentado, Board Members Aldner Damalerio and Benjie Arcamo, and other guests. Awards were given to the best puroks, best community garden, best booth display, best artistic design, and best ecological solid waste management practices. Balilihan LGU also recognized its achievers, such as board passers and graduates with Latin honors.Mayor Chatto expressed her gratitude for the blessings that Balilihan received in a social media post. She also prayed to the town’s patron Our Lady of Mount Carmel and thanked the Balilinhons for their cooperation and support for the town’s development.The Sumad celebration ended with a Piyesta sa Nayon, a traditional Filipino fiesta.
