The local government unit (LGU) of Tubigon, Bohol has issued a scam alert to warn
the public of a phone scam that uses the name of a town official to solicit money.
According to the LGU Tubigon’s Facebook post, they received a report that a
resident was victimized by the scam.
The scammer called the resident and pretended to be a well-known official in the
town, asking for a load or prepaid credit.
The victim complied and sent the load to the number given by the caller.
The scammer then continued to call and ask for more load to various numbers, still
using the name of the town official.
LGU Tubigon has advised everyone to be careful and not to trust and transact
through cell phone calls, especially when the caller claims to be a town official.
Local authorities also urged the public to verify the identity of the caller and to report
any suspicious calls to the authorities.
LGU Tubigon said they are coordinating with the Philippine National Police (PNP)
and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to trace and identify the
scammer and to prevent further incidents.
Phone scam is one of the common modus operandi of fraudsters who take
advantage of people’s trust and generosity.
The PNP has previously warned the public to be vigilant and not to fall prey to such
scams. They also advised the public to report any fraudulent activities to their hotline
117 or to their nearest police station.
