Calape Vice Mayor’s Son Ranks 10th in National Physician Exam

Dr. Gaius Sulpicio Garces Yu III, the son of Calape Vice Mayor Dr. Sulpicio Yu Jr., placed
10th in the October 2023 Physicians Licensure Examination (PLE) in the Philippines.
Yu scored 87.42 percent, tying with Josiah Keith Domingo of the University of Santo Tomas.

Dr. Gaius graduated magna cum laude from the University of the Philippines Diliman with a
degree in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.
He then pursued his medical degree at the St. Luke’s Medical Center College of Medicine-
William H. Quasha Memorial Class of 2023.
PLE was administered by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) and the Board of
Medicine on October 20, 21, 27, and 28 in various cities across the country. Out of 6,456
examinees, only 4,083 passed, or 63.24 percent.
The top performing school was the University of the Philippines-Manila, with a 100 percent
passing rate.
The topnotcher was Justin Riley Yap Lam of the Cebu Institute of Medicine, who scored
89.67 percent.
The PRC announced the results on November 6, three working days after the last day of
examination. The registration for the issuance of professional identification card and
certificate of registration will be done online.
PLE is conducted twice a year, usually in March and October. The exam covers various
subjects, such as biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, surgery,
obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and public health.
PLE is one of the requirements for becoming a licensed physician in the Philippines.
According to the PRC, an examinee who fails for the third time must complete a refresher
course in a recognized medical school before taking the exam again.
