Hematuria
We often hear this word when we go to the doctor for
a general check up and the doctor can see something
in the urinalysis.
So, what is this term all about? True hematuria is the
presence of red blood cells in the urine which can be
gross or microscopic.
Gross hematuria may have the color of tea, coke or
very bright red depending on urinary ph, specific
gravity and protein content.
The following are the causes of gross hematuria
among the pediatric age group: documented urinary
tract infection; suspected urinary tract infection,
perineal irritation, meatal stenosis with ulcer, trauma, –
recurrent gross hematuria, acute nephritis,
coagulopathy, stones, and cystitis, epididymitis and
tumors
Whereas microscopic hematuria may be an isolated
finding or associated with proteinuria. Other causes
include: exercise when done strenuously; fever;
pyrogens; hypercatabolism; and upper respiratory tract
infections among healthy children
Whether it is gross or microscopic hematuria, these
children should be seen by their pediatricians for
thorough physical examination and management.
