DR. BRYAN CEPEDOZA-MEDICAL INSIDER
Occupational Hazards
PART 9
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): We are still in the topic about DROWNING in relation to water as an occupational hazard. What is the cause of drowning, Dr. Bryan?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: A person may drown due to a lot of reasons. One is because the person does not know how to swim. Many people, especially children, do not know how to swim. And if ever they know how to swimm they easily get weak while swimming. There are alos those who swim but they lack the close supervision of a lifeguard. It is nececessary that a lifeguard has to supervise swimmers, especially those in the pool.
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): Why is a lifeguard necessary?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: A lifeguard is helpful as he can warn swimmers of improper activities and/or of danger while swimming. He can also enforce pool regulations and water safety policies. Besides, when there is somebody drowning, the lifeguard can administer first aid in the event of injury. He can also rescue swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administers CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary.
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): In the swimming pool area, why is the lifeguard needed?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: Lifeguards monitor not only the swimming pools. They also can monitor beaches, water parks and other areas that involve swimming to maintain safety at all times. That is why, we don’t hire just anybody to be a lifeguard. He has to receive training in water safety and may rescue swimmers who are sick, hurt, sick or in distress. A lifeguard is also supposed to keep a pool, beach or other areas clean and free of debris.
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): What, then, are the skills needed by a person to qualify as a lifeguard?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: One of the skills that can help one to become a successful lifeguard is the skill in swimming. This is the main requirement for a lifeguard – his swimming abilities. Another one is strength. Then, the knowledge in first aid is also a must. He has also to be oriented in navigation and communication. A lifeguard should also be alert and should have the leadership skill.
The Bohol Tribune (TBT): As a doctor, Dr. Bryan, would you advise swimming as a form of health exercise?
Dr. Bryan Cepedoza: Yes! Swimming has health benefits. It could keep your heart rate up and could take some of the impact stress off your body. It will also train you to build endurance and cardiovascular fitness. Moreover, it will help you maintain a healthy weight, healthy heart and lungs. (To be continued)
