Antequera celebrates 148th Foundation Day with Piskaya Festival

The Municipality of Antequera, Bohol, will celebrate its 148th Foundation Day with a series of activities and events under the theme “Pagbuntog sa mga Hagit, Pagtukod sa Kalig-on ug Pagpatunhay sa Kalamboan” (Facing the Challenges, Building Strength and Sustaining Development).

The four-day celebration, dubbed as Piskaya Festival, wiĺl showcase the town’s rich culture, history, and basket weaving industry. Piskaya is a Visayan word that means “abundant” or “plentiful”.

Festivities will kick off on March 14, 2024, with the blessing and opening of the basket and agricultural display booths, followed by the opening program and the fire olympics conducted by the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) Antequera.

On March 15, 2024, the town will honor the women of Antequera with a Women’s Day Celebration, which will feature various activities such as livelihood seminars, health services, and games. The evening will be filled with music and talent as the Kanta Piskaya (Singing Contest) will showcase the best singers of the town.

The third day of the celebration, March 16, 2024, is dedicated to sports and adventure, as the Tour De Antequera 2024 (21KM, 10KM and 5KM Trail Run) will challenge the participants to run through the scenic trails of the town. The night will be rocked by the “Rakrakan sa Plaza” featuring the Antequera Local Bands, who will entertain the crowd with their original and cover songs.

The highlight of the celebration is on March 17, 2024, the actual Foundation Day of Antequera. The day will start with a mass and a floral offering, followed by a short program where the mayor will deliver the State of the Municipality Address and will recognize the board passers and the persons who excel in sports. The program will be followed by a lunch and fellowship with the guests and the residents of the town.

The afternoon is expected to be filled with color and excitement as the street dancing and the festival ritual showdown will take place. Participants, dressed in colorful costumes and props, will perform lively dances that depict the town’s history, culture, and basket weaving industry. Awards on best performers and the best basket and agricultural display booth will be announced then.

The celebration will cap with a live band that will entertain the crowd until midnight.

Piskaya Festival is not only to commemorate the town’s founding anniversary, but will also showcase its abundant resources, products, and talents.
