San Miguel Celebrates 63rd Charter Week with Cultural, Sustainable Tourism Focus

By Dave Charles Responte

San Miguel town joyously marked the conclusion of its 63rd Charter Week on Thursday, March 14, 2024.

Mayor Ian Gil Mendez spearheaded the weeklong festivities, which commenced on March 8 and reached their zenith on March 14 at the San Miguel Municipal Gymnasium.

This year’s Charter Week was themed “A Celebration of Cultural History, Tradition Tapestry, and Sustainable Tourism,” reflecting the town’s rich heritage and forward-looking vision.

The celebration’s commencement was signified by the Women’s Day Program on March 8.

On March 9, Mayor Mendez officiated the “Kasalan ng Bayan,” a mass wedding ceremony, coinciding with the inauguration of the agricultural products exhibition.

Throughout the week, the town’s barangays erected various booths, significantly contributing to the festive atmosphere.

The local government also organized the Barangay Officials Congress on March 11, followed by a Gender and Development (GAD) carrier support activity on March 12.

On March 13, the town highlighted its emerging boxing talents in the “Sumbagay sa San Miguel” event. The grand finale featured a Drum and Lyre competition that captivated attendees.

Distinguished guests at the culmination event included former mayor and current Assistant Secretary Virgilio Mendez, Governor Aris Aumentado, Vice-Governor Dionisio Victor Balite, 2nd District Congresswoman Maria Vanessa Aumentado, and 2nd District Board Member Jiselle Rae Villamor.

In a tribute to local excellence, the town paid homage to San Miguel professionals who have significantly contributed to the town’s development and reputation.

Established in July 1961 by Executive Order 23, San Miguel was originally part of Trinidad, itself once a barrio of Talibon. The government’s seat, initially located in Cambangay Sur, a former Talibon territory, reflects the town’s historical roots.

San Miguel’s current site, once a lush forest abundant with wildlife, attracted settlers from Ipil during the early American period. The influx of migrants, primarily from the municipality of Loon, transformed the area into a thriving community.

Named after its patron saint, St. Michael the Archangel, San Miguel is a 4th class municipality in Bohol province, comprising eighteen barangays. The town’s annual feast day on May 10th honors Saint Michael, celebrating the town’s spiritual and communal bonds.
